I'm Nuts for These Nuts!

While preparing for our family vacation last week, the Sous Chef and I first ventured to the grocery store to stock up on some healthy (and some not-so-healthy) road trip snacks.

Nuts are my go-to quick-fix snack, because they are so portable and so packed with healthy fats and vitamins.  So when I saw these on the shelf, I was instantly happy!

I admit that underneath my initial giddiness was a bit of skepticism.  I was worried that the nuts would be overly sweet, or too candy-like.  I was pleasantly surprised when the chocolate coating turned out to be the perfect combination of sweet and smoky - a thin powder encasing the almondy goodness.

So far, I've enjoyed them both by themselves and also as a sweet topping for my cereal or oatmeal.  When I think about it, the toppings-possibilities are endless, and don't have to end with breakfast: ice cream, milkshakes, cupcakes...I bet there are tons of ways to use these beauties even in savory dishes!

The only caveat I have to mention is that they are sweetened with sucralose (better known by its brand name, Splenda).  I am not a big proponent of things that are chemically altered, like artificial sweeteners, so I'd have to caution you to eat these in moderation (though it will be hard to).

Also, remember my number one rule about nuts:  They are the seeds of trees.  Big, huge, trees.  There's lots of potential energy trapped inside those little shells.  A 150-calorie portion is only one ounce - that's about 25 nuts.  So snack smartly!

  1. The nuts sound delicious! I'm a fan of Splenda - and I use it in recipes...but I don't sweeten too much. Unfortunately Stevia upsets my digestive system - which is too bad...I'd LOVE to be able to use it. I've tried it in so many different ways and amounts...it's a no go. So, splenda is my no-calorie sweetener of choice. I recently purchased a bottle of agave nectar - I've not tried it yet, tho.

  2. Ann, I stumbled upon this blog entry about agave nectar: http://www.fooducate.com/blog/2010/01/17/eight-facts-about-agave-nectar/

I've used it before - I really liked it. But in the end, sugar is sugar, and I still have to be careful about how much I consume. Moderation is key, right? =)
