The Cats Are in Mourning

Take a look at this picture, and tell me if you know what is going on:

You're right.  Lula is pissed.

But it's not because she hates having her picture taken (which she loves).  It's not because we took away her favorite pipe-cleaner toy (which we did not).  It's not even because Dolce pushed her out of the way and finished her breakfast (which she often does).

It's because this happened on Saturday:

We took her balcony garden away.  What started out as a simple herb garden and quickly morphed into an urban jungle teeming with life has now been reduced to the size of the above-pictured green and purple ball.

And Lula ain't havin' it.

Look again at that picture of her and try to tell me you can't hear her little fur-lined heart breaking.

Her wonderful green screen is quite simply...gone:

My balcony now puts the "ew" in view.

I feel terrible for my poor kitties.  I explained to them that this is part of the natural cycle of life, and that next year we'll have another beautiful garden to look at.  And then I remembered that they are cats and may or may not care to understand me in the least.

Until the Sun starts shining down a bit more on us in the Spring, the whole family will just have to survive on the memories of our once thriving slice of balcony heaven:

I hope that's enough to satisfy the cats for now.

I hope they'll forgive me one day.

I'm not holding my breath, though.

  1. I have always thought if I ever got a cat again I would have some kind of jungle tunnel made for them. I think I saw one at a cattery.
Anyhow, your cats will have some adjusting to do. They both are beautiful.

  2. Thank you Tina! I loved having that balcony jungle for them - it gave them a chance to explore outside but in a protected environment. I'm not the type to let my cats run free outside!
